Mermaid AU ala Thor and Loki~
[What was suppose to be a relaxing trip had turned into, unsurprisingly, a trip where he ended up doing more work in his hotel room than anything else. It wasn't ideal but honestly it was to be expected and there was a part of Loki that had just expected that this was bound to happen even before he'd gotten onto the plan. Wallstreet waited for no one and he had resigned himself to sitting on the porch attached to his room, at the very least, and getting some fresh air while he typed away at his laptop and listened in on group calls as his co-workers bickered about one thing or another.
It was a particularly harrowing call that finally sent him over the edge and he'd hung up without a word, closing his laptop and leaving his hotel room without a second though. His cellphone had been left behind on his bed, the young man just needing to get away and clear his head because dammit this was suppose to be a vacation.
Loki's anger, his annoyance, had him stalking around in a bit of a haze and by the time he finally calmed down he found himself walking along the boardwalk. It was late afternoon and bustling though not near as bad as the city he was use to and slowly but surely he relaxed and eventually made his way down towards the water after slipping his shoes off and trudging through the sand. The cool breeze off the water was extremely refreshing and he let out a content sigh as he stood at the water's edge, the waves crashing gently around his bare feet as he took a moment to just exist as he was.
He really should have left his laptop at home. Or at the very least 'lost it' during transit.]

It had finally come to that after years of Thor disobeying his father and swimming to the surface to see the humans and collect their artifacts. He'd been kicked out of his home, stripped of his status as heir to the throne, and forbidden from interacting with any merfolk from their kingdom.
Worst of all, Thor actually thought his father might have meant all of it, that this wasn't a temporary punishment.
Well, if he was no longer welcome with the merfolk, then where should he go but naturally back to the surface?
The sun was setting by the time he made it there, and the particular area of the beach was mostly empty save a single human standing by the shore where the waves met sand. Thor, keeping his tail beneath the water, hoisted his upper half upon some nearby rocks and watched the dark-haired man as he seemed to be contemplating something.
He was quite a handsome human, and Thor couldn't help but admire his long legs. Legs... the one thing keeping him from getting out of the ocean and starting a new life with the people out there. How discouraging, to know he wasn't welcome at home, and he could never be with the humans either.
Still, that didn't stop him from wanting to interact with them. When the man looked his way he gave a tentative wave. ]
Good evening.
no subject
Evening...what are you doing?
[The man could very well have been diving, spear fishing maybe. A surfer taking a break. It was just a bit odd to see someone resting so casually on rocks like that. His frown was definitely one of curiosity as he watched the man--the extremely handsome man he couldn't help but note--Loki absently starting to walk along the shore a bit to move himself more towards the rocks.]
You aren't hurt or something, are you?
no subject
Ah, no. No, I'm fine.
[ His tail fins fluttered beneath the water with a mixture of anxiety and excitement. Maybe they could have a real conversation, or the human might give him something.
Then again, he might just walk away if he thinks Thor is just another human in the water.
Deciding what to do in these situations was always so difficult. ]
What are you doing?
no subject
If you're sure.
[Absently tapping his shoes against his leg, Loki tilted his head.]
Debating whether to jump in the water and never come back out.
[It comes out dryly as he glances at the ocean, watching another wave break gently against the shore.]
A stressful day will do that to a person though. Make you think irrational thoughts, that is.
no subject
I've thought about leaving the water and never coming back in.
[ But of course, that wasn't an option either. Stressful days could certainly make people think such irrational thoughts, couldn't they? ]
Why was your day stressful? [ He had little concept about what humans did outside of the ocean. He'd seen people with strange devices in their hands before, but would never be able to name them, nor say what they did. ]
no subject
What keeps you coming back?
[Normally he wouldn't care to strike up conversation like this but after the day he'd had? It felt nice to talk about something rather mundane. And this man was nice. Sweet even.
So much so that he went as far as to ask about Loki's own stressful day.
That gets a huff of a laugh from the man as he shakes his head.]
I was made to work when I'm suppose to be here on vacation. I should have known traveling a thousand miles away from my office would exempt me from it all.
no subject
[ Thor began to relax again when the man didn't move closer. He was glad to have any conversation after his banishment, and this human was easy enough to talk to.
It was just a shame to hear that he lived a thousand miles away. That meant seeing him regularly wouldn't be an option. ]
What work do you do?
[ He asked, clearly interested. It wasn't the sort of basic conversation most people would have, but something where the other party truly wanted to know the answer. He could continue to increase his knowledge of humans that way, in addition to learning about this one himself. ]
no subject
[It's said with amusement tinging his words. Loki had overheard many over-dramatic surfers before so it wasn't all that surprising to hear the man say something like that. Must be nice to be able to enjoy such simple stresses.
He shifts his weight from one foot to the other before taking a few steps forward so he's standing more in the water where it rests even as the tide pulls back.]
I work for an accounting agency. [The short of it. He didn't really want to dwell much on the topic of work.] It's dull and boring but it pays the bills. [He glances over at the other, eyebrow going up.] What about you?
no subject
I'm a fisherman.
[ He grins, feeling awfully clever for coming up with that response. ]
It's dull and boring, but it also pays the bills. [ He steals the man's words, thinking it'll make him sound more like a fellow land-dweller.
This time he doesn't flinch back when the man moves closer in the water, though he's ready to make a quick getaway if he has to. It would be a shame... ]
no subject
He can't help but grin as his words are thrown back at him, though, ducking his head with a breathy chuckle.]
It sounds much more relaxing than my profession though I could be very wrong. I've never even held a fishing pole before. [A few steps around taken towards the rocks again, Loki tempting fate a bit just to see what the other will do since he seems to have relaxed again.] Have you been doing it your entire life?
no subject
[ He likes that laugh, soft as it is.
But someone is getting closer again. Thor starts creeping sideways along the rocks, certainly acting as though he's feeling threatened. He knows it must be an odd contrast with their friendly banter, but there's still an anxiety over the idea of revealing himself. ]
Yes, all my life. [ The water grows a bit deeper near the rocks, though there are some underfoot. Thor isn't aware, but someone with a pair of feet might find them slippery. It's actually much more dangerous than he knows. ]
no subject
Fair. If you aren't fishing though why are you just reclining on some rocks in the water? Swimming?
[He's maybe five feet or so away from the outcropping that the other man was perched on, watching Thor shift sideways.]
You grew up around here then. I doubt you're from the mainland if you've been doing this your whole life. [Loki's almost envious of the other.
Another step, seemingly fine and he makes to cross to a larger rock that's actually sticking out of the water when he loses his footing. He doesn't have any time to try and catch himself and hits the water--and the rocks--hard, the foot that had slipped caught between some of the rocks and twisted oddly while the hand he brought down to catch himself comes down on an oyster shell that had been obscured from view in the water.
The man let's out a sharp, pained sound, shoes lost to the water as he jerks his hand back as the salt water stings it, blood seeping down his hand.]
Son of--
no subject
[ He's about to continue when the other man suddenly cries out in pain, blood spilling from his hand while his foot is seemingly caught in the rocks.
Thor doesn't hesitate then. He knows without help he might seriously injure himself, or be stuck when the tide rises and end up drowning. So, he dips beneath the water, the fins of his tail visible above the sea momentarily as he goes to check on the situation with his own eyes.
Yes, the man's foot is definitely stuck. With as much care as a merman can be expected to use when dealing with something foreign as a foot, he manages to wiggle it free from the rocks.
Of course, then the human will have trouble standing, won't he?
Thor realizes he's put himself in a situation where he has no longer any choice but to give himself away. Hopefully the human will be grateful enough for the help that he won't cause much of a fuss.
As he rises from beneath the water, he picks the man up with one arm around his back and one beneath his knees. ]
I'll bring you back to shore. That looks like it might need attention.
no subject
He'll be grateful, later, for the other's assistance even as he hisses in pain when his foot is pulled free, Loki cradling his sliced hand against his chest--
Wait.
Realizing what he's seeing as Thor suddenly lifts him up, Loki is torn between assuming he's in shock/possibly drowning or...actually no that has to be what's going on because there's no way this is real. It can't be. This man cannot be--]
You--you're...
no subject
[ It's a quick swim back to shore, where he places the human on the sand. Now that he's in barely any water, Thor's full ocean-blue tail is on display for Loki to see.
He folds his arms on the sand, lying on his stomach, fins fluttering in the light breeze. No one else is around still, and since he's already given himself away... it can't hurt to show off a little.
Assuming his new acquaintance is intrigued and not terrified. ]
It's Thor, by the way. I don't believe we properly introduced ourselves.
no subject
I..I hit my head, didn't I? This has to be a dream. [He murmured, shaking his head as he shifted his gaze from Thor's tail to focus on the man himself completely forgetting about his bleeding hand and twisted ankle.
At least for the moment.]
Thor? [How ironic.] I'm Loki.. [He can't help but laugh weakly.] You're a figment of my imagination, aren't you? I really did a number on myself this time..
no subject
[ He smiles briefly as he hears the man's name, but that smile quickly turns to a frown as he remembers Loki's injuries.
There's only so much Thor can do to help him... bringing him to shore was all, really. He doesn't want to see Loki go either, afraid that he'll never see him again if he does. ]
You can touch me if you like.
[ Instead of convincing him he is imagining things, like he should, Thor wishes to prove himself. It's foolish and risky, but he does so anyway. ]
no subject
[Merpeople weren't real. They were things out of stories; out of movies. Not actual things that existed.
And yet...
The offer to touch, to have that proof, is too tempting to resist and Loki keeps his bleeding hand pressed against his chest as he reaches out with the other to brush his fingers against Thor's tail. The first brush of his fingers against scales has him jerking his hand back, the solid feel of it surprising because seriously he thought he was imagining this. But then he reaches out again and applies a bit more pressure as he touches, breath catching as realization fully sets in.]
Gods you are real..
no subject
This isn't a courtship, just because he finds himself fond of the human. ]
I am.
[ He only wishes there was something he could do about those injuries. Unfortunately, there is little that can be done in the water for a human. ]
After you receive treatment, do you think you would come back to visit me?
no subject
His ankle throbs dully as he starts to focus on the situation at hand again and he glances at it even as his fingers still brush against the other's tail.]
I...yes. Here? [Loki frowns slightly.] It's not safe here is it? For you, I mean.
[It apparently wasn't safe for him either but that was besides the point.]
no subject
[ There's always the possibility he will bring others in hopes of proving what he saw, but in that case, Thor will simply keep his tail underwater and swim away. He has to be careful, and one human at a time is quite enough. ]
You can stay here, by the shore. I'll sit here as I am now.
[ Meanwhile, Loki is petting his tail, so Thor doesn't see any problem in running a hand over one of the man's legs. They're so strange up close, and yet he envies Loki for having them. ]
Please?
no subject
[This was a rather secluded area of the beach. Despite still expecting to wake up tomorrow and realize this had all been a fever dream, Loki didn't want to put his new friend in danger.]
If you're sure...once I get this all taken care of I'll b-be--I'll come back. [He stumbled over his words as the merman ran a hand over one of his leg's, an involuntary shiver going through Loki as he found himself watching Thor's hand as it moved along his leg.]
I'll be back tomorrow, I promise.
